This soft-core porn satire is an unusually offbeat effort even by the all-over-the-map standards of director McBride (DAVID HOLZMAN’S DIARY, BREATHLESS, MEAT LOAF: TO HELL AND BACK). Haplessly horny high-schooler Archie Anders (who has a friend named Mughead, in case you missed the reference) suffers a series of misadventures, such as popping a boner during a basketball game, getting dragged through a cold shower by naked cheerleaders, and peeping at his nude sister while she shaves her armpits. Filled with in-jokes, movie references, bleeped-out dialogue, and borscht-belt groaners, HOT TIMES was first appreciated by Jonathan Rosenbaum in a 1976 review that compared the film to Preston Sturges and R. Crumb and called it “alive, goofy, and unpredictable.”
