The scene is set in Rome at the time of Rinascimento. A ferocious, unscrupulous nobleman murders an old aristocrat, then confesses his crime to a renowned prelate. The latter, a cardinal, although horrified by what the penitent has told him, cannot give him away due to the seal of confession. Things get even more complicated when the holy man's own brother finds himself accused of the murder...
