In a series of interviews, Thai-German actress Joy Sonchai Körner interviews her Thai family, relatives of the mother who died when Körner was three. Posing the same questions to all her subjects, she attempts to pinpoint the experiences and events which have been key in shaping their lives. This process of biographical exploration sheds light on the hopes, fears, outlook and values of three generations of the same family, creating an authentic portrait of the individuals concerned and the country they live in. Through this series of life stories, 'Family Ties' delivers fascinating insights into the Thai mentality, Thailand's underlying social conflicts, the traditional family hierarchies currently being overturned and the contradictions and fragility of a nation facing an uncertain future.
