New Years Eve 1916. Alina, visits her brother, George, on his English estate. With her is her lover, Harry, who has fought on the Somme. Also present is Paul, Alina's son, and his fiancée, Clara along with Doctor Danvers, estate manager, Salt, his wife Rose, Edwin the local schoolteacher and servants Martha and Jan. Over three days we see the cruelty unleashed by these people on themselves and each other in a mirroring of the war being fought on the Continent.
