One in this series of eight programs on various aspects of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This documentary look at the Belle Epoque (1890-1914) was inspired by an exhibition mounted at the museum's Costume Institute, and includes commentary and reminiscences by Diana Vreeland, the exhibit's curator. For the fortunate few, according to narrator Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., the Belle Epoque is now remembered as a time when "the pursuit of beauty, entertainment, and romance constituted a way of life." The film examines the era's fashions, art, literature, architecture, music, public figures, and important news events. Also providing commentary are the Sixth Earl of Carnarvon, Barbara Cartland, Erte, Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Douglas Byng, James H. Van Alen, Enid Goulden-Bach, and Erich Berg. Includes early film footage of Queen Victoria's funeral (1901), the Paris Universal Exposition of 1900, Archduke Francis Ferdinand's funeral (1914), dancer Loie Fuller, and British suffragette Emily Davidson, killed while attempting to seize King Edward VII's horse in mid-race.
