My Boy; or, The Mystery of the Roadhouse Murder

Jack Robinson, after causing his devoted mother endless trouble and expense by his reckless extravagance and dishonesty, disappears. Six years pass with no word from him. Then we see him in company with a questionable character known as Bernice, at a country roadhouse, which is a veritable den of crime, being the resort of a gang of thieves. A terrific thunderstorm is raging, and Arthur Rogers, a merchant, is driven to seek shelter within, not knowing that the roadhouse is a disreputable place. He is suspected of being a detective, and trouble ensues. Just then comes the bolt of lightning, which totally demolishes the building, and it is burned to the ground. The police descend on the spot, in an intended raid, only to find the building in ruins, and the criminals fled. Jack and Bernice are captured, but Arthur Rogers flees, to escape implication in the raid.
