But all too often, particularly in nonindustrialized nations, girls’ childhoods are stolen, their dreams for the future shattered. Often denied access to education, girls are far more likely to assume household responsibilities, be conscripted into the workforce, be pushed into early marriages, and endure sexual abuse and, in some cases, mutilation.
