In one of the greatest challenges of his career, the brilliant and contraversial choreographer Maurice Bejart was invited to present the world premiere of his ballet of Le Marteau sana Maitre by Pierre Boulez at la Scale in 1973. Cameras observe Bejart and his cast of seven dancers during the weeks of prepartion in Brussels, both in the rehearsal room and in their homes, as they tackle unwelcome setbacks and through the exciting events before, during and after the premiere.
