In the 1800`s, just after the Civil War, Luis moves with his family from Mexico to Val Verde, Texas. There he befriends Jody, the local Sheriff`s son, and they embark on a number of mischievous jaunts with other friends from school. The group befriends Doc Whitaker, a stranger who recently returned from the war where he served as a doctor. He was accused of killing his wife before the war, and even though Doc was acquitted, the townspeople continue to believe he was guilty of the crime. When a person from town goes missing, Doc Whitaker is accused and put in jail. The boys attempt a daring jailbreak, and in the end the truth about Doc and the missing person comes out.
