The complete restored works of Manaki Brothers, the first filmmakers of the Balkans, are being screened at the festival within the framework of the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the Turkish Cinema. Photographer by profession, becoming the court photographers of the Ottoman Sultan in 1911 and of the King of Yugoslavia in 1929, Yanaki and Milton Manaki are regarded as the first cinematographers and therefore the first filmmakers of the Balkans. The two brothers made their first shoots with a 300 model Bioskop film camera that Yanaki bought from England. Recording local events and traditions, the Manaki Brothers cinematographed their films between 1905 and 1926 on 35 mm, black-and-white, nitrate film. In 1921, they started screening films nearby their home in the Macedonian town of Bitola in the open air, and later at a hall they set up in 1923. During 1995 and 1996, analogue preservation of the Manaki Brothers’ cinematographic works was carried out by processing them into acetate, “safety” film, and in 2012, their film heritage was digitalized and restored. These projects were undertaken by the Kinoteka na Makedonija (Cinematheque of Macedonia) at the Hungarian Filmlab, in Budapest with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture of Macedonia and UNESCO. Citizens of the Ottoman Empire, Manaki Brothers witnessed major historical transformations and had the opportunity to film events such as the celebrations of the Second Ottoman Constitution, parades of Turkish cavalry, infantry and artillery troops and the Thessaloniki and Bitola visits of Sultan Mehmed Reşad V. These film are considered by certain film historians as the beginning of film in Turkey. The film titles are created in accordance to Milton Manaki's memoirs, except for The Funeral of the Metropolitan Emilianos of Grevena, the only film edited by the Manaki Brothers.
