Mr.Prentissisanappraiserathisfirm,theHouseofPrentiss.HeisabouttogotoFloridatoappraiseavastcollectionofarecentlydeceasedcollector,VanderLocken,whenhereceivesanunwantedvisitfromIvorHager,whoinformshimof"TheLeftFistofDavid,"avaluablebutmysteriousartobjectthatwasstolenfromaMexicanchurch.HageroffersabribebutPrentissfirmlyrejectsitandheadstoFlorida.InFlorida,Prentissmeetsupwithhiscohorts,Mr.Munseyandhissecretary,andtheysetabouttoappraisethecollection.However,Hagershowsupagain,sinceheisaneighbor,withateasingshotofabowandarrow.Itappearsallareinterestedinthe"LeftFistofDavid."Afteramistakenpoisoningofacat,PrentissandMunseybecomeconcerned,andfabricateasculptureofafist.Thinkingthesculptureisreal,Hagerenterswithagun,readytostealtheobject,butthendiscoversit'safake.
