Longing for a life beyond her hometown in the Thai province of Buriram, Ploy moves to various Southeast Asian cities in search of work. She ends up in Singapore as a sex worker at an illegal, makeshift brothel operating under the cover of a jungle’s leafy darkness that is eventually turned into a public park. Ploy’s story is interwoven with those of other migrant workers, backgrounded by scenes of labour, prohibition and surveillance. Nature, a silent witness to all this, is not spared from the violence of man’s impulse to control. Employing a variety of materials such as photographs and paintings, Ploy joins a wave of recent films that centres these voices from the margins.
